Carbs Are Your Friend

As far as working out goes, carbohydrates lead to energy, which can then be used to move around, burn fat, and so forth. When we eat carbs, our bodies break the carbs down into glucose, which then enters our muscle cells, giving us the fuel we need to exercise at maximum capacity. If your body is running low on glucose during your workout, you’ll probably feel tired, weak, maybe even lightheaded and nauseous – basically, the opposite of how you’d want to feel during a workout.

So, a couple hours before your group fitness class, it’s a good idea to eat simple carbohydrates because they are digested quickly and provide ample amounts of quick energy. Simple carbohydrate-rich foods include granola bars, fruit, oatmeal, Greek yogurt (a good source of carbs and protein), dried fruit, crackers, rice cakes, and whole grain toast.

Fueling Up On Protein

Protein, like carbohydrates, is also an important pre-workout energy source. This is especially crucial if you are doing weight training or lifting. Did you know that when you exercise, you’re essentially creating small tears in your muscle fibers? It’s true! These small tears don’t injure you, but they eventually make you stronger, but only with the help of protein. Protein helps those muscles heal and grow stronger, giving you the strength to lift the next day. Some simple protein-rich foods include nuts, turkey slices, a hardboiled egg, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, and dairy milk or soy milk.

Keep Timing In Mind

Ideally, you should be eating anywhere between thirty minutes to three hours before your workout. Obviously, this is a fairly massive window, but it really just depends on what your body composition, what type of workout you have planned, and so forth. With time and experience, you’ll be able to experiment and see what time frame works best for your body. If you’re working out first thing in the morning, then you probably won’t have time to eat a whole meal before you hit the gym. In that case, a small snack or mini-breakfast should suffice.

Stay Hydrated

This piece of advice is universal and applicable in just about every situation, but even more so with vigorous exercise. You’re going to be working up quite a sweat while you exercise, and you need ample amounts of water in your system in order to sweat. Also, in addition to going into your group fitness class fully hydrated, make sure to drink water throughout the session.
