Learn why Trainer Melanie Neading is adding lemons to her water…
When life gives you lemons, drink them in your water! As Trainers, we are always talking about the benefits of water. Especially during the warm summer months, water is essential to stay hydrated. You may not always want to drink as much as you should, so try adding lemon, if you haven’t already. If you aren’t crazy about the lemon, check out the benefits you are missing out on! Lemon water may help with digestion, clearer skin, and detoxify your body.
Lemon juice helps in aiding your body in digestion and detoxing. The anatomical structure of the lemon juice is close to the structure of the juices your stomach releases to breakdown the food. The added juice “tricks” your liver into producing more bile, which aids in digestion and at the same time helps prevent bloating and eases an upset stomach. The absorption process is also slowed down, which allows more nutrients to be absorbed out of the food and less insulin to be released into the bloodstream.
Lemons are a citrus fruit which means they are full of Vitamin C and citric acid. Since our bodies do not produce Vitamin C, we must intake it from our food. Just ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice contains 23.6 grams of Vitamin C which equals 30% of the daily allowance. Vitamin C builds up our immune system and helps battle colds and flu. In some studies, it has shown to reduce Cardiovascular disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. The antioxidants found in Vitamin C help reduce damaging free radicals, which in return keeps skin clearer, smoother, and looking younger.
Some like to drink warm lemon water in the morning and replace caffeine filled drinks to boost energy without the caffeine crash. The energy boost comes from the negative ions that the lemons release into the digestive tract. By stimulating the digestive tract, toxins are removed from the body. Lemons also act as a diuretic which helps to cleanse the kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract to keep them healthy. Just the scent of lemon has been found to relieve stress levels and enhance mood. Try handing a glass of lemon water to a grumpy family member or co-worker!
Great ways to use lemons & stay hydrated this summer (and all year long!):
*Simply add a slice or two to each glass of water!
*Add other slices of fruit such as oranges, limes, or cucumbers to a pitcher of water.
*Freeze fresh lemon juice in ice cube trays and use like an ice cube in your glass.
